Response from Geoff Regan, M.P.
Halifax West

Dear (name removed).

Thank you for your e-mail regarding pension security.

The Liberal Party and I are very concerned about the state of pensions in these difficult economic times.

Pension management and the viability of pension plans is a serious issue across the country and we are taking a careful look at pension plan management.

In the fall, my party suggested pension reforms that included giving employees with stranded pensions following bankruptcy the option of growing their pension assets through the Canada Pension Plan, and protecting vulnerable Canadians on long-term disability by giving them preferred status as creditors in case of bankruptcy.

This voluntary option would guarantee pension principal and ensure pensions aren’t locked in when businesses go bankrupt and market conditions are at their worst, protecting them from future market turmoil.

Liberals also propose establishing a Supplementary Canada Pension Plan (SCPP) to help Canadians save more.

While I cannot guarantee the Conservative Government will address your concerns in the next budget, please be assured that the Liberal Party will continue to fight to strengthen the security of Canadians’ retirement incomes and raise your concerns in the House of Commons and Senate.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have questions or concerns about this or another matter.

Yours truly,

Geoff Regan, M.P.
Halifax West
