What a shock to find dear Otto in the obits, I am deeply saddened by this news..Otto was one of my favorite colleagues and flying with him was so delightful. I loved going for walks with him in Zurich and picking wild garlic. He knew every tree and plant in the woods and their benefit for whatever ailed you. His kindness and wonderful humour will be forever in our hearts...Heinz, please know that we share your grief, and will miss a very fine gentleman. Janne & Bob (Capt) Layzell

He was such a pleasure to work with as he had such a GREAT sense of humor. He was kind and a compassionate person. I remember an incident where I had a family emergency. Otto knew that my daughter was asthmatic and that I frequently had hospital visits with her. He had been advised by crew scheduling that I would be arriving late for my on board briefing. When I arrived he asked how my daughter was doing. I couldn't speak a word as my eyes filled with tears. He gave me a hug and made me a cup of tea and told me to relax for a bit before the passengers started to board. He kept an eye on me throughout my work day and when we arrived for our layover he asked if I would care to join him for dinner as he felt that I needed a friend. I never forgot that kind gesture. I will miss Otto dearly.

I was very sad to hear of Otto's passing from cancer and thankful to know he had a loving partner by his side. Otto and I flew together many times in my early years with A/C and they were memorable and always filled with laughter. He was meticulous, helpful, playful and always had a smartass comment to make about something! We were once stuck on board a DC8 stretch in Victoria in the middle of the night waiting to ferry back to Vancouver with no departure time. We were all feeling a bit sorry for ourselves as we were scheduled to have a layover in Victoria. Otto took it upon himself to get a serving tray and come through first class, where we were all sitting, and pretend to serve us. Except he spoke for himself and for us, parodying all of the most frustrating ways passengers had of answering our questions during a flight. It was absolutely hysterical and we were all crying we were laughing so hard. That was vintage Otto. I loved him and am sure he's in a wonderful place.
